Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a recognised risk after spinal surgery, but its incidence in Indian populations — particularly among patients with sickle cell trait or disease — was not well established. This prospective observational study enrolled all patients who underwent spinal surgery at New Civil Hospital, Surat between January and October 2016, documenting clinical findings, haematological results, and imaging to detect DVT.
The study examined whether sickle cell disease increases DVT risk in this context, providing one of the first prospective datasets on this complication in South Gujarat. Its findings help inform DVT prophylaxis decisions for surgeons operating on this patient population.

Traumatic fractures and dislocations of the subaxial cervical spine (C3–C7) carry serious neurological risks, and the optimal timing of surgical intervention has been debated. This prospective study enrolled 26 patients with these injuries and systematically documented preoperative physiological parameters — including respiratory rate, blood pressure, heart rate, PaO₂ and ASIA impairment scale scores — alongside demographic and radiological data.
The study identified which preoperative factors and surgical timing decisions were associated with better outcomes, providing clinically useful predictors for surgeons managing acute cervical trauma. The article has been cited in at least 4 subsequent papers. Published by Thieme on behalf of the Brazilian Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
