Indian hospitals price major joint surgery as a package: a bundled figure for a routine, uncomplicated admission, indexed to the room category you choose. Knowing where that bundle ends is the single most useful thing you can do before comparing prices.

Typically inside the package

• Operating theatre charges, and the surgical and anaesthesia team's professional fees.
• Room charge and routine nursing care for the expected length of stay.
• Routine in-patient medication, dressings and standard post-operative care during that stay.
• The routine set of pre-operative and post-operative investigations defined for the package.

Always billed on top

• The implant — charged separately, without exception. Brand, material and design all move this figure. See the knee implant guide for what actually differs between them.
• Assistant surgeon — ₹6,900 to ₹12,420 if opted for.
• Any stay longer than the expected length; ICU or high-dependency care if it becomes necessary.
• Blood and blood products; investigations outside the routine set; management of comorbidities such as uncontrolled diabetes, cardiac or renal conditions during the admission.
• After discharge: outpatient physiotherapy, follow-up consultations and review X-rays. Physiotherapy is not optional if you want the knee to work well — budget for it.

These categories are longer, more instrument-intensive operations with longer expected stays. The schedule reflects that. Each still rises across the same six room categories; the table shows where each category begins in the general ward and where it reaches at suite level.

Revision versus primary — what you are paying for

A revision means taking out a joint replacement already in place and putting in a new one, usually because of loosening, infection or wear. It is a fundamentally harder operation: the old implant and its cement mantle must be extracted without destroying the remaining bone, specialised instruments are needed, and the new components often need stems, sleeves or augments to bridge bone that has been lost. Infected cases are frequently staged — one operation to remove the implant and place an antibiotic spacer, and a second months later to implant the new joint. That is what the "1st / 2nd stage" category describes, and why two admissions are involved. Revision implants are also, as a rule, more expensive than primary ones — and they too are charged separately.

Bilateral — one admission or two?

Doing both sides in one admission starts from ₹1,27,560 in the general ward. Two separate single-side admissions in the same category would total around ₹1,55,660. So on package charges alone, one admission is generally the lower total — one anaesthesia, one theatre setup, one hospitalisation. Two implant sets are needed either way and are billed separately either way.

But the money is the second question. Simultaneous bilateral replacement is a bigger physiological load and is only offered after cardiac, pulmonary and general fitness assessment. For some patients, staging the two sides is the right call regardless of cost. The clinical decision is made first; the comparison follows it.
