What is a bone density (BMD) test?
A bone density test measures how much calcium and other minerals are packed into a segment of your bone, most commonly the hip and lower spine. The standard method is a DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) — a low-dose imaging scan, not a blood test and not a surgical procedure. It's the same measurement doctors use worldwide to screen for and diagnose osteopenia (early, mild bone loss) and osteoporosis (more advanced bone loss that raises fracture risk), well before a fracture happens.
The scan is quick, painless and involves lying still on a padded table for a few minutes while a scanning arm passes over you — there is no injection, no needle, and it does not require fasting. Your result is expressed as a T-score, explained in the FAQ below.
Who should get a bone density test
These are standard clinical criteria doctors use to decide who is most likely to benefit from bone density screening — not a diagnosis, and not a suggestion that you have a problem. If one or more applies to you, testing is generally worth considering; if none apply, the camp is still open to anyone who would like a baseline check.
Post-menopausal women
Bone loss accelerates after menopause as oestrogen levels fall — this is the single most common reason bone density testing is recommended.
Age 60 and above
Both men and women — bone density naturally declines with age, and 60+ is a standard age-based threshold used in many clinical screening guidelines.
Long-term steroid (glucocorticoid) use
Oral steroids taken for three months or longer — for asthma, arthritis, autoimmune conditions or after certain illnesses — are a well-established cause of accelerated bone loss.
History of a fragility fracture
A fracture that happened from a fall from standing height or less, or from minimal trauma that shouldn't normally break a bone, is a recognised signal worth investigating.
Family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture
A parent's hip fracture, or a known family history of osteoporosis, is an independent risk factor worth discussing with a doctor.
Other recognised risk factors
Early menopause (before 45), low body weight, prolonged immobility, thyroid or parathyroid conditions, and long-term smoking or heavy alcohol use are all additional factors doctors weigh when recommending testing.
What happens at the camp
Registration & a short history
Check in at Prish Hospital, Vesu, and fill a brief health questionnaire — steroid use, prior fractures, family history and menopause status, where relevant.
The scan
A non-invasive bone density scan, typically 10–20 minutes. No needles, no injections, no fasting required. You lie still on a padded table.
On-the-spot report
Your result, including your T-score, is generated at the camp — you don't have to wait days for a lab report to come back.
Doctor-led interpretation
Dr. Khanna or the camp physician walks you through what your specific result means — in plain language, not just a number handed over on a printout.
Next steps, with no pressure
Normal results come with general bone-health guidance. If a result shows osteopenia or osteoporosis, you'll be given clear options for follow-up — there is no obligation to decide anything on the day.

Frequently asked questions — BMD test camp, Surat
What does the BMD test cost at the camp?
Camp pricing and registration fees have not been finalised yet — to be announced, contact us for the latest status. Please call or WhatsApp +91 89808 22922 to register your interest ahead of the announcement. We will not publish a price on this page until it is confirmed.
How long does a bone density test take?
The scan itself usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. Including check-in, a short health questionnaire and the result discussion, plan for roughly 30 to 45 minutes at the camp.
Is a bone density test painful?
No. A bone density (DEXA-style) scan is non-invasive and painless — there are no needles or injections. You lie still on a padded table while a low-dose scanning arm passes over the area being measured, usually the hip and lower spine.
Is a bone density test a blood test?
No — this is a common mix-up. A BMD test is an imaging scan, not a blood test, and it doesn't require a blood sample. Some doctors separately order blood tests (such as calcium or vitamin D) to help explain a bone-density finding, but the scan itself is just a few minutes on a table.
What do the results mean? What is a T-score?
Your report shows a T-score, which compares your bone density to that of a healthy young adult. As a general guide: -1.0 or above is considered normal; -1.0 to -2.5 indicates low bone mass (osteopenia); -2.5 or below indicates osteoporosis. These ranges are a general guide, not a self-diagnosis — a doctor at the camp will go through your specific result with you and explain what it means for you, including whether any follow-up is needed.
Do I need a referral to attend?
No referral is required. If you have previous bone density reports, X-rays, or a list of current medications (particularly any long-term steroid use), bringing them along is helpful but not mandatory.
